The Irish road race calendar was today hit with a late cancellation when a notice this morning broke news the Newbridge GP was off.
The host club said it had been informed late on Saturday night there would be no ambulance cover available.
And so this morning in the hours before the racing was due to begin the events were called off.
Hosts Newbridge Cycling Club took to Facebook to say they had no option but to cancel the event.
“Due to Order of Malta ambulance service canceling on us at 12pm last night, the 2019 Newbridge GP has to be canceled,” it said.
“We pride ourselves on the safety of all riders and have exhausted all avenues to try to get a replacement ambulance but without success. The event cannot go ahead. This was out of our control.”
The cancellation follows the Termon GP scheduled for yesterday in Carrickmore, Co Tyrone, being called off some time ago, though the reason was not clear.
Also yesterday, the Michael Shiels and Darach McCarthy Road Races set for Rathkeale, Co Limerick, by Newcastle West Knights, was called off.
An announcement was made last week and the host club said the races would be run later in the season.
Unfortunately one of the race organisers has had an accident and is indisposed for a period.
On the positive side, the Lacey Cup that was abandoned last Sunday due to heavy snow in Kerry was rescheduled and ran yesterday.
But the cancellation today of the Newbridge GP, which is always a very popular fixture, was an unexpected blow.
Hopefully it may be rescheduled for later in the year, though there was no reference to that in the statement today. We’ll bring you more news on that if and when we get it.
