Early season road races cancelled, postponed or rescheduled

The new season is just one weekend old but there have already been some cancellations for the coming weekend as well as postponements and rescheduling. Above, Sean Hahessy wins the Lacey Cup in 2017 (Photos by George Doyle)

The Lacey Cup, which was stopped midway last Sunday due to snow, has been rescheduled quickly by host club Manor West Tralee BC.

It will now take place this coming Saturday, March 9th, but on a different course.

The event’s addition to the fixture list this weekend is good news because two other races that had been scheduled are off.

The Michael Shiels and Darach McCarthy Road Races due to be run on Saturday are not going ahead, though they will be run later in the season.

And the Termon GP, which was also set for this Saturday, has been cancelled.

The inaugural Termon Wheelers GP was staged last year in Carrickmore, Co Tyrone.

It was run off on the route previously used for the National TT Championships in 2015.

Host club Termon Wheelers issued a brief statement saying the race was cancelled for this weekend, and this year. But they hoped it would return in 2020.

The Michael Shiels and Darach McCarthy Road Races are run each year in Rathkeale, Co Limerick, by Newcastle West Knights.

Unfortunately one of the race organisers has had an accident and is indisposed for a period.

This has forced the club’s hand and the race has had to be called off this weekend.

However, the promoting club intends to reschedule the event for later in the season, which is good news.

In light of the unfortunate cancellations this weekend, luckily the Lacey Cup will be staged on Saturday.

The only difficulty for the host club is that the course they normally use is not available.

But they’ve moved very quickly to secure a new route and put a race plan in place.

Race headquarters will once again be located at Manor West Hotel & Leisure Club.

Anyone who raced last Sunday, when the races were abandoned after the start, will still need to sign-on but at no charge.

Any riders who didn't enter last Sunday are welcome to attend this Saturday at a fee of €20.

Once again the race will be handicapped for the A1-A2-A3 riders. And there will be a separate A4 Race.

Sign on is from 12:30 to 1:30 and the A4s are off at 2pm followed by the handicap main event fifteen minutes later.

The route is a modification of the Kerry County Champs 2018 course.

The main event route can be viewed by following this link and the A4 race route is at this link.

As well as the Lacey Cup, Rás Naomh Finian takes place this Saturday in Moyvalley, Co Meath, promoted by Clonard CC.
