Irish riders uninjured but major crash forces cancellation of Fleche du Sud

A major crash at a race in Luxembourg has forced theorganisers to cancel the stage and escort those uninjured to the finish line. Irish national road race champion Damien Shaw and Connor McConvey are among those taking part though they are believed to be okay.

A major crash involving over 30 riders has forced the cancellation of the third stage of the Fleche du Sud in Luxembourg.

Irish riders Damien Shaw and Connor McConvey were among those in the field but are reportedly okay and can continue tomorrow.

However, several others are not so lucky.

At the time of writing we believe six riders are in a serious condition with Luxembourg website lequotidien.lu reporting one rider is in a coma.

We have no clear update on those affected by the crash which happened on a steep descent less than 10 kilometres into the race.

An Post Chainreaction tweeted that the riders who were uninjured were escorted to the finish by police.

A helicopter was dispatched to the scene of the crash as medics scrambled to tend to those worst affected.

The incident occurred when riders were descending at up to 80 kph and the front of the race appeared to have collided with a wall, causing a huge domino effect behind, with some riders careering down an embankment.

Six ambulances were dispatched to the crash site and those most seriously injured were taken to nearby hospitals.

A helicopter was also dispatched to the crash site while rescue workers, paramedics and volunteers all came to the site of the crash to offer assistance.

The road section between Hostert, Nagem and Redange-sur-Attert was closed to all traffic, said the Luxembourg police.
