A group of Irish rides currently in Greece for their first stage race of the season have been hit by a vomiting bug. Many team have gathered in Greece for the UCI-ranked one-day and stage races that have proven especially popular with U23 development teams and other UCI Continental squads.
A total of 11 Irish riders from three teams are in Greece at present, with most having already taken in one-day racing action ahead of the upcoming Tour of Rhodes (UCI 2.2). However, the vomiting bug has impact the Irish riders on those three teams.
It seems to have hit many riders, team staff and race officials gathered in Greece for the races and the Irish have not been spared. However, it is as yet unclear if some of the riders will be ruled out of the race as a result of their bout of illness.
The race, which gets underway tomorrow, Thursday, will start with a prologue TT ahead of three road stages. It is a very tough early season assignment, often run off in hot conditions, and a bout of illness right before the event is the last thing the Irish riders needed.
David Gaffney and Adam Rafferty are both racing in Greece with Hagens Berman Jayco, Killian O'Brien is with Team Skyline and a group of Irish riders with Velo Performance U23 team.
Those Velo Performance riders include Jack Conroy, Curtis Neill, Isaac Burman, Josh Callaly, Eoghan Lattimore, Christopher Marshall, Luca Holmes and Cal Tutty.
At least some of the Irish riders in all three teams have been impacted by the illness, the implications of which are not yet clear.
