Ireland’s Felix English is currently ranked the world’s best scratch race rider after the sport’s governing body, the UCI, updated their ranking charts on Monday.

It’s an amazing achievement for the former national criterium champion and current road pro as he is in amongst some seriously good company.

English’s points tally of 1,696 points is based on his cumulative score in events since the beginning of this year.

The final score of each rider is based on a very complicated system, counting one’s top three UCI class one 1 events, or 1.1 on the road, and top two in class 2 events, or 1.2 on the road.

In the case of world and European championships riders are allocated a certain number of points, depending on the event.

English’s tally is based off the world and European championships, the most recent UCI World Cup event in Apeldoorn, the 3 Days of Aigle last month, the World Cup in Hong Kong back in January, the Trofeu Ciutat in Barcelona in September, the UK Track Revolution in the UK in January and the European Championships in July.

Some 200 points behind him is Belgian sensation Moreno de Pauw while Spain’s Sebastien Mora is also right up there as well.

Also going well is English’s Irish teammate Fintan Ryan; in 26th on 760 points. Eoin Mullen is 49th in the men’s sprint and is also the same ranking in the keirin.

For the points race, Mark Downey is 14th despite winning a gold medal at the most recent UCI Track World Cup in the event in Apeldoorn. Marc Potts is 47th in the same event.

For the women, Ireland are 12th in the team pursuit ranking. For the full rankings click here.
