Irish rider Nathan Kurensky has secured a place in a
Dutch road team for 2021 having cut his teeth in recent years on the Irish road
and MTB scenes.
The 19-year-old, who moved from South Africa to Ireland
four years ago with his family, has already represented Ireland off-road and is
looking forward to progressing with his racing in the year ahead.
Now living in Tourmekeady,
Co Mayo, Kurensky rode in the colours of Connacht club Cunga CC in 2019 and
competed with Black Rose Racing last year, though his season was hit hard by
the Covid-19 pandemic.
Having started racing MTB while still living in South
Africa, he initially stuck with that discipline while settling into life in
Ireland.
However, road racing has become more of a feature of his
life in the past two seasons and he is now set to throw himself fully into the
road scene in the year ahead, Covid-19 allowing.
Kurensky has secured a place with TWC Maaslandster in the Netherlands and will live with other foreign riders in a team house in Maastricht.
The team has a schedule of racing that includes local road race and criterium events as well as one-day races and stage races in other parts of Continental Europe.
Because the outbreak of Covid-19 has been so unpredictable, with surges across Europe in recent weeks, Kurensky told stickybottle he would wait a little longer before deciding on his firm travel plans for the year.
However, with a team pre-season camp provisionally set for Mallorca at the end of next month or early March, he may travel back from that camp to the Netherlands with the team and stay there for the year.
Kurensky represented Ireland in the junior MTB race, alongside Lee Harvey, at the European Championships in 2019 in the Czech Republic after taking a string of podium places, including two wins, at the National Points Series and the Biking Blitz.
We’ll have an interview with him in coming days.
