Irish rider in New Year scare as close-pass driver sails towards him | Video

Most riders will have suffered a version of this out on the roads as a driver "sails" towards you, getting closer and closer

An Irish rider was given a New Year's Eve scare in Co Cork yesterday when a driver "sailed" towards him. The cyclist - who goes under the @righttobikeit Twitter handle - recorded the above clip late yesterday morning as he was heading through Carrigaline in the direction of the city.

On this particular stretch of road there is a lane for those traveling straight or going right and another lane for cyclists and drivers who are turning left.

The cyclist remains in the lane for straight ahead as the driver of the car attempts to overtake; initially on a broke white line, which turns to solid just before a traffic island up ahead.

It appears the driver does not have enough time or space to fully overtake and so is forced to take corrective action to avoid hitting the traffic island ahead. The driver veers back to their left, back into the road and "sails" towards the cyclist.

The cyclist slaps the bonnet of the vehicle, likely from fright and to warn the driver of the danger. At that point the driver appears to brake to avoid hitting the cyclist and/or the traffic island.

The rider behind @righttobikeit regularly shares videos of close calls, some of which he reports to the Garda. As well as posting his latest video of the incident yesterday, he also offered an update on an unrelated incident at the beginning of November and which he reported to local gardaí.

On that occasion a driver passed him very closely and you can see that video below. Now @righttobikeit has revealed that driver was fined €120 and given three penalty points. The outcome to that case was secured less than two months after the report, with supporting video, was made to local gardaí, which is pretty fast for the Republic.
