Irish rider Jesse
Ewart has spent much of the last two weeks in hospital in Romania and Germany
after suffering serious face and skull injuries when he was hit by a motorist
in Romania as he prepared for a race there.
Ewart, an Australian-born
rider who has declared for Ireland, has taken some strong results this season,
including 3rd overall at the Tour de Rwanda (2.1) back at the start
of the 2022 campaign. More recently, he came to Ireland for the National Road
Championships and finished 6th in the men’s road race in Kanturk, Co
Cork.
However, while he had been in good form, his season came to a shuddering
halt in Romania as he prepared to ride the Sibiu Cycling Tour (2.1) with his German-based
Continental team Bike Aid.
Ewart
(27) told stickybottle while he had to have surgeries and had been left with scarring,
he was relieved the crash had not left him with life-changing injuries.
“I’ll have some bad scares for life but all my limbs work
perfectly so, for that, I’m grateful,” he said of his crash during which he was
hit by a motorist in a car and flew up on the front and window of the vehicle. A
broken jaw, nose and cheekbone were among his litany of injuries.
“The worst damage was my face,” he confirmed. “I had to get my
cheek bones plated because I basically cracked my skull ear-to-ear and broke my
nose. I broke a couple vertebrae and some other injuries; ripped open my bottom
lip and snapped a heap of teeth. I’ve also had stiches in my chin, neck, chest.”
He
added that after the crash two weeks ago he had been flown to Germany for further
medical treatment. While he was now discharged for hospital and looking forward
to a full recovery, he said he had been looking forward to the stage race in
Romania and was frustrated to be taken out of by the crash as he was in good
form.
