Francis Doone collapsed and died during a charity cycle in Armagh at the weekend. The 51 year-old Antrim man is believed to have suffered a heart attack and despite receiving CPR on the roadside he never recovered.
A 51 year-old male cyclist died of a suspected heart attack while taking part in a charity cycle last Sunday in Co. Armagh.
Francis Doone from Gawley's Gate in Co Antrim was participating in the Ride On for Raff memorial charity cycle in aid of leukaemia research when he collapsed around lunch time.
He had been riding in a group which had left Lissummon community centre near Jerrettspass, north of Newry, when he took ill.
CPR was administered on the roadside before emergency services arrived on the scene.
He was rushed to hospital but passed away a short time later.
A statement issued on behalf of the organisers said: “We would like to convey our sincere condolences to the family and friends of fellow cyclist Francis Doone of Glenavy who tragically collapsed and passed away in hospital this afternoon following our cycle. May he rest in peace.”
Francis is survived by his wife Geraldine and daughters Breige, Chloe and Erin.
The deceased was manager of the St Joseph's GAA club, Glenavy, team that won the Antrim IFC title less than a fortnight ago when they beat Dunloy.
Gavin Phillips, secretary of club, said: “He was a very healthy guy and never drank or smoke nor anything like that, and it is a big shock that he died the way he did.
“We would like to pass on our condolences to his wife and family.”
