Irish pursuit effort falls short in ride-off for London Paralympic bronze

Brown and Shaw broke the Irish record today but just missed out on a bronze in London

It was a question of ‘close but no cigar’ for pursuiter James Brown and his tandem pilot rider Damien Shaw on the London velodrome this evening, with the pair missing out on a Paralympic medal in the bronze medal ride-off race with Spain.

After a much slower start than the Spaniards, Brown and Shaw looked to have timed their effort very well indeed in the individual pursuit B as they clawed their way back into the contest and briefly went ahead of their opponents.

However, in the last 1km of the 4km effort the Spanish pair turned it on again and got their noses in front. In the closing laps Brown and Shaw gave it everything they had but unfortunately continued to lose ground and in the end were well beaten, by a margin of two seconds.

Brown’s and Shaw’s time in that bronze medal ride off this evening, at 4:26.075, was slower than their time of 4:25:557 in qualifying this morning when they were fourth fastest.

However, the Spanish beat the Irish by almost a second in that qualifying round in a time of 4:24.539 and they went quicker on their way to bronze this evening, with a time of 4:24.015.

Brown and Shaw will be disappointed with their performance, having taken a silver medal at the Para Track Worlds in LA back in February. However, they have the consolation – albeit cold comfort – of knowing they broke the Irish national record in the qualifying round.
