We're used to battling against all kinds of challenges while cycling in Ireland; rain, wind, weather, potholes and even errant motorists. But an Irish politician has now drawn everyone's attention to a cycling-related hazard that rare gets a mention - being "shat on" from the skies above.
Cathal Crowe TD was left fuming - as in, fumes comes off him - for the day yesterday when he was targeted from a above by the "sharp shooter" seagull as he cycled to Heuston Station to catch the train back to Co Clare. The bird's dirty work went into his face, hair and all over his clothes.
Crowe - usually an aggressive breed but beaten fairly and squarely this time by a gull - said he had no clothes to change into and apologised in advance to the people he was due to meet later that day.
"A Dublin seagull shat all over me as I pedaled my way to Heuston Train Station," he said. "He was a sharp-shooter and got my pants, jacket but also my face and hair.
"I’m now on the train heading home to Clare and haven’t a change of clothes - apologies in advance to the groups I have lined up this meet this afternoon. I look a sorry state and probably smell of 'Eau du Gul'."
