While healthcare, crime and of course homelessness have been big themes so far in the general election campaign, transport and the environment have also been key issues.
Some parties have understandably merged the environment and transport as vehicles pump out such large volumes of damaging emissions.
As a result, cycling is seen by some parties as a way of reducing congestion and emissions and getting people fitter.
Some of the parties are making all the right noises; in their promises anyway, though the actions are yet to be seen.
However, one political party not interested in even pretending they have a cycling policy is Renua.
It has made no effort to hide its disdain for cycling and cyclists when asked about its cycling policies by Thejournal.ie.
The party's chairperson Séamus Ó Riain told TheJournal.ie cycling was “not top of our priorities”.
Bizarrely it said it was not sharing a cycling policy
because of the recent violent attacks and gun crimes in parts of Ireland.
“A young man was chopped up and put into plastic bags in
Drogheda,” Renua said. “Another stabbed to death in Cork.
“You’ll have to forgive us but worrying about how the
average metro sexual cycles to work at Google is not top of our list of
priorities.”
The comments were made in response to queries put to all the parties about cycling.
TheJournal has formulated the answers in a comprehensive piece which you can find here.
