Megan Armitage, who represented Ireland at the Paris Olympics last year and was riding with pro team EF Education-Oatly, is stepping away from professional cycling.

Her exit from the pro game appears to be immediate, ending on March 31st, with yesterday her first day off the her US-registered team's roster.

Armitage, a 28-year-old from Co Offaly, was twice 2nd in the road race at the National Road Championships and, more significantly, became the first Irish female rider to win a UCI-ranked stage race.

She won the final stage and the overall at Vuelta Extremadura Féminas (2.2) in Spain two years ago when riding for Arkéa Pro Cycling Team.

She then went on to secure a pro contract with EF Education-Oatly - for three years - which was set to carry her through to the end of next season, being the sole woman to represent Ireland on the road at the Paris Olympics.

However, with the first year of that contract completed, and a couple of races ridden this year, she has decided to step away from pro cycling, according to the team.

"Megan Armitage is stepping away from professional cycling effective April 1st," the team said in a brief statement on social media. "We’re grateful for her contributions to the team and wish her the best in her next chapter. Hope to see you out on the road again soon.

Armitage, who also represented Ireland at the World Road Championships in Glasgow in 2023, began her 2025 season in Australia, competing at the Tour Down Under, where she was 48th overall.

She had not raced since the conclusion of that event in Australia on January 19th and has not yet made any comment on her retirement.
