Irish Olympian Lally lands new post in Australian cycling

Best known on the home scene for winning the Tour of Ireland and representing his country at the Moscow Olympics in 1980, Tony Lally has secured a new cycling post in Australia.

He has been appointed to the board of Cycling New South Wales after a long career in the financial sector in Ireland and Australia.

Association chairman Peter Beaumont said the Dubliner had secured the position after the “challenging task” of selecting the successful candidate from approximately 20 applicants.

“Tony brings to the board significant business leadership, corporate governance and sporting experience,” he said.

Lally, originally from Cabra, won the Tour of Ireland in 1974 and was national road race champion in 1977 and 1978.

He triumphed in most of the big races in Ireland and rode on national teams all over Europe from his days as a junior competitor through his senior career.

Not long after gaining selection for the Olympics, he retired from competitive cycling and relocated with his family to Sydney, Australia, where he still lives.

He worked in the financial sector in Australia in a number of roles including as chief executive of major pensions company SunSuper.

He is a frequent visitor to Ireland and has maintained contact with many on the domestic cycling scene.

When working for the Commonwealth Bank of Australia in the 1980s and into the 90s he arranged invites and sponsorships for many Irish teams to ride the Commonwealth Bank Classic stage race which was sponsored by his then employer.

He competed in the road race at the Olympics on a three-man team that also included Billy Kerr and a 20-year-old Stephen Roche.
