Daire Feeley has clearly secured his place in national sporting history with his victory last weekend at Rás Tailteann. He ended a 14-year wait for a home winner in Irish cycling's biggest race and his profile has rocketed nationally in the last week.

He was covered very extensively in the national mainstream news media during and after the Rás - coverage that Irish cyclists, apart from our top professionals, usually struggle to secure.

And now his local newspaper - the Roscommon People - has published an eight-page souvenir supplement to mark the success of the county's best ever cyclist, indeed now one of its best known sports stars.

In a country where Gaelic Games dominate the sporting press, especially in the regions, this kind of coverage for cycling is something that was quite frequent decades ago but is rarely, if ever, seen in the current era.

The supplement, which is in the just-published current edition of the Roscommon People, features Feeley on the full page cover in the final yellow jersey of Rás Tailteann winner. And the remaining seven pages feature an interview with him, a two-page photo spread and a large number of messages of congratulations to him from all over the county.
