Irish looking for big results in Mexico World Cup after Martyn Irvine’s heroics in Manchester

Caroline Ryan is just 10 points off being ranked World No 1 in the pursuit again and has the chance to make up that ground this weekend in Mexico.

The Irish track team is in UCI World Cup action again this weekend, getting their campaign in Mexico underway tomorrow, Thursday.

The duo of World Championships bronze medalist Caroline Ryan and emerging sprint star Eoin Mullen will be looking for some big results after Martyn Irvine bagged World Cup gold in the points race on the boards of Manchester just last month.

Caroline Ryan has spent much of 2013 at the top of the UCI rankings for the individual pursuit, and though she has slipped to number 2 in recent weeks a good performance over the next few days in Aguascalientes could see her move back to that coveted top spot.

She rides both the points race and the individual pursuit, in which she is just 10 points behind Australian Rebecca Wisiak in those world rankings.

Young Eoin Mullen has fond memories of this weekend’s venue, having ridden the World Cup there in January and lowered the 200m national record to 9.965seconds.

The emerging sprinter from the Aran Islands will be looking to lower that standard again this weekend.

Based at the UCI’s World Cycling Centre in Aigle, Switzerland, he rides the sprint and the keirin this weekend and will be looking for points towards qualifying for the World Championships in Colombia in the New Year.

Martyn Irvine has recently suffered a family bereavement so he will not ride this weekend.
