One of the country’s most promising riders, Michael O’Loughlin, has signed for Bradley Wiggins’ ‘Team Wiggins’ for the coming year.
The reigning national junior road and time-trial champion will become an official member of the team from January 1st.
It’s a superb move for O’Loughlin and he joins a setup that focuses on the development of young riders, led by the 2012 Tour de France champion and seven-time Olympic medal winner.
The team race a dual programme; one geared towards the track and the other geared towards the road riders.
O’Loughlin was approached by the team during the summer and has maintained contact since then.
This year, the team rode under a UCI Continental licence and that’s how it will be into next year, giving O’Loughlin superb exposure – and many chances to show what he can do.
The team have a hefty budget and as well as being backed by British Cycling, also have considerable support from Sky.
The equipment will be of the highest standard also and rival anything in the ProTour, with Pinarello bikes and Zipp wheels being preferred by the team’s management.
Some of the other riders in the team include 2012 World Pursuit Champion Andrew Tennant, Team Pursuit World Champion Steven Burke, former An Post Chain Reaction man Owain Doull as well as Sam Harrison (formerly NFTO) and Liam Holohan (formerly Madison Genesis).
