Irish road and downhill international Christopher McGlinchey was the victim of an apparent road rage incident near Port Stewart on the Antrim coast last month where his right thigh took the brunt of a collision with a car. The 21-year-old Irish is making a good recovery and has since returned to training ahead of next year.
One of the road season’s most impressive riders had a lucky escape recently when he was a victim of a suspected road rage incident while out cycling with his girlfriend.
Christopher McGlinchey was out for a Sunday spin when a car approached him from behind.
The driver, who appeared frustrated by the couple riding two abreast, closed to within a few feet of the 21 year-old before eventually passing him out.
“He came up behind us; beeping the horn and shouting at us before passing us," said McGlinchey.
“I threw my hand up in the air in frustration and as soon as I did he braked and I went straight into the back of him."

McGlinchey suffered a significant haematoma to his right quad which necessitated hospital treatment.
The couple both later gave statements to the PSNI and the driver was contacted and has since been charged in relation to his suspected dangerous driving.
“It was a Sunday afternoon and we were riding up around the north coast, around Port Stewart, on the weekend. It was unbelievable.
“He pulled over after the incident, he was shouting at us because he thought he was in the right; he didn’t think we could ride two abreast on the road.
“My right thigh hit the tail of the car and I did a somersault but thankfully there were no broken bones.
“It’s improved a good bit but I’m still not sure about the bike, whether that’s okay.”
It was a great year for McGlinchey on the road this year. He went from A4 to A1 in a matter of weeks and rode for the Irish development team in the Tour of Ulster.
Earlier this year we did a piece with him on his training. Have a look You can read that by following this link.

McGlinchey needed to go to hospital but seemed in good spirits immediately after the incident and is already back on the bike.
