Dominic Jelfs (Velo29-OTR-Vankru), who claimed the silver medal behind Sam Bennett in the U23 National Championships in 2010, has taken the biggest win of his career this week.
Jelfs, an Irish international, has been competing in the UCI 2.2 Tour of Bulgaria and on Thursday he won the fifth stage from Stara Zagora to Burgas.
He managed to get into the winning break of 13 riders, who were to finish three minutes ahead of the peloton. Coming towards the finish, Jelfs jumped clear of his breakaway companions to win by five seconds.
He was listed as a DNF on yesterday’s final stage of the race. The overall was won by Maxat Ayazbaev from Kazakhstan.
The Tour of Bulgaria has a top quality field, featuring a mixture of national teams including Germany, Switzerland, Ukraine and Serbia, and also professional teams including the feeder squads for Katusha and Astana.
It was Jelfs’ second win of the season, having claimed a smaller win in Brittany, where he is based, earlier this year. His win in Bulgaria will undoubtedly help him in his pursuit of a professional contract.
