Forty greenway projects in the Republic of Ireland have just been allocated funding, with a total of almost €60 million distributed to the projects nationwide.
Some of the money has been allocated for improvements or ancillary works to greenways already in place and other funding is for projects that are already under construction. Many of the projects being funding are in varying stages of the planning process or are at the pre-planning phase.
The funding has been awarded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland under its "2022 Grant Allocations to Local Authorities for National Roads, Active Travel and Greenways".
Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan TD (Greens) said significant greenway investment was being directed at the Border region counties of Donegal, Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim and Louth.

“This funding will also support extensions of the Grand Canal Greenway in Offaly, Kildare and South Dublin, link the North Kerry Greenway to the Limerick Greenway, and join the Waterford to New Ross Greenway with the Waterford Greenway," he said.

"We are moving into a new and exciting phase when more and more Greenways are being connected, with TII also developing a National Cycle Network.”
We've compiled a county-by-county list (below) showing how the funding is broken down. We've ordered that list highest to lowest; from the county that got most to those counties that got smaller sums. Westmeath was awarded more than any other county for next year, at €8.7 million.
Counties Kilkenny and Laois appear to be the only two counties in the Republic where no sums of money have been award for greenways next year under this round of funding.
The second list below sets out the details of the specific projects funded and what stage those projects are at; whether the money is allocated for work on greenways already up and running or if the funds are going to greenways under construction or at the planning stages.
