Gardaí are investigating after Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment Denis Naughten was involved in a road crash while out cycling in Co Roscommon today, Monday.

He was struck by a car and is understood to have sustained back injuries in the collision.

Ambulance personnel were called to the scene and he was subsequently taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Galway.

His injuries are not thought to be serious, though he is undergoing tests and X-rays to determine the full extent of any damage.

Recently Mr Naughten, an Independent TD for the Galway-Roscommon constituency, helped secure an additional €1m for improvements in the National Ambulance Service in 2017, as part of the HSE Service Plan.

The programme included a commitment to develop protocols for the transport of patients to facilities other than Emergency Departments, which allow ambulances bring patients directly to Roscommon Hospital in circumstances where it is appropriate to do so.
