A video recorded of a father and son cycling to school
has prompted mixed reaction, with lots of those responding to it voicing criticism
of the footage.
There were plenty of positive reactions; lots of Twitter
users responding well to the footage and wishing father and son safe cycling.
However, in the negative commentary it is clear to see
that many members of the public regard cycling as a very dangerous pursuit.
And they also see helmets and hi-vis – even during
daylight cycling – as the key features, rather than the lack of a cycle lane
and almost non-existent hard shoulder.
These are perhaps not surprising views considering the
messaging from the Road Safety Authority which effectively puts hi-vis at the
centre of cycle safety campaigns.
Claude O'Donegan
from Herenswood, Carrigaline, Co
Cork, shared the video on Twitter. It shows his son, aged 11 years, riding to
school by the roadside in Carrigaline.
"So proud of my son who wanted to cycle to school
this morning,” he said. "I had to escort him though as the route is not
safe.
"100km/h zone with a 50cm hard shoulder, maybe less,
trucks flying around you! Some scattered cycle lanes have been put down, please
connect them now."
After many negative comments – some of which we have included below – Claude took to Twitter again to make further comment, including a link to this video of cycling in Holland.
“So sick of people preaching about
the use of helmets and high-vis clothing,” he said.
“How many helmets and fluorescent
clothes you see in this video, showing kids cycling to school in the
Netherlands. Just normal people going about their own lives...”

I get u are supporting your son to cycle to school but what u did there is a bit unsafe u have to admit? No safety gear to be seen ?? If he swerved and god forbid knocked down who’s fault would it be ??

Way too risky
— James Leonard (@JamesLeonard85) September 11, 2019
ehhh and a high Viz jacket/bag ? Seriously ...
— daragh o murchu (@daraghomurchu) September 11, 2019
And absolutely not having a go at you but there are over-bag reflective + hi-viz stretchy covers that might make you feel a bit safer about taking that road too.

Ridiculously irresponsible letting a child cycle that road
— Claire (@claireob13) September 11, 2019
Too dangerous on roads like that

Please put some bright flashing lights in both the front and back so he is more visible to drivers. The more visible the more time drivers have to make their move ensure they give him enough room.

What about a hi viz vest. No burden
— Gerry Sheanon (@gerandliz) September 11, 2019
Not in a million years would I allow a child to cycle that road with or without me. That's horrendous.
— Jay Magennis (@Saltmine1000) September 11, 2019
That looks very dangerous. That boy should not be let on the road unaccompanied.
— TCM (@TCM39599285) September 11, 2019
please don't let him do this again- it really is too dangerous and drivers are not aware enough about cyclists
— John Doherty (@dohertjgd) September 11, 2019
That’s terrifying. I won’t cycle as it’s too dangerous around the city as well. I have a bike but I’m too chicken to use it
— Jenny P (@Juno_Macloon) September 11, 2019
Why is he not wearing a high vis with dark colour clothing and a black school bag ?????
— Padraig Quinn (@qaughoo) September 11, 2019
Where’s his helmet??
— Gareth (@Gareth_Shiells) September 11, 2019
He needs a helmet.
— Gar Fitz (@GarFitz1) September 11, 2019
Helmet and a high viz would be great for him.
— Bryan Mc Cann (@Bryan277) September 11, 2019
Outrageously dangerous and irresponsible
— YouNeek (@NCPH1973) September 11, 2019
Are you mad?!!
— Liam D (@LD5679) September 11, 2019
No lights, no helmet, no hi-viz.
