De Ronde van Cork has taken the decision to cancel its cyclocross races scheduled for Sunday week as a result of a dispute with Cork City Council over the type of insurance cover needed for the event.
The club said it was now concerned road races may be
impacted by the same dispute.
“It is with a heavy heart that we must report that this
year’s race will not be going ahead as planned on November 17th,” De
Ronde van Cork said of the promotion that had been planned for Tramore Valley
Park.
“Also, our youth training camp that was being planned in co-ordination with Cork Sport
Partnership will not be going ahead at the park.”
Cork City Council had
insisted that a special form of insurance cover be put in place to protect it
from an insurance claim in the event that one rider crashed into another.
While De Ronde van Cork explained it was affiliated to Cycling Ireland and was covered by the federation’s insurance, the council insisted additional cover be put in place.
De Ronde van Cork said it had
tried more than a dozen insurers and the cover that the city council was
looking for does not exist. As a result, its events have now been cancelled.
“Cork City Council has taken the position that our Cycling Ireland Insurance is not adequate and leaves the council exposed to possible claims if there was, in their words, a life altering injury, resulting from a rider to rider incident. We believe and argued that this position was extreme,” the club said in a statement.
“As a result of this policy no Cycling Ireland activity can happen at any park run by Cork City Council, and by implication the road also. As a direct result the BMX track is also closed.
“Cork City council stated in
all their correspondences that they continue to support sport. The insurance that they are looking for does not exist in
the marketplace.”
