Ireland’s National Cyclocross Championships, which take place in Sligo this weekend, are to be broadcast on TV.
And the races will also be live streamed on YouTube and Facebook in a first for what is a rapidly growing part of the sport.
TG4, which has a strong tradition of broadcasting major professional races with commentary as Gaeilge, will be filming the races.
It will broadcast a one-hour highlights package in coming weeks; which is extensive coverage for Irish racing. The date of the broadcast is yet to be confirmed.
The Irish TV station will also make the package available worldwide on the TG4 Player meaning Irish people abroad can catch all the action.
However,
before that highlights programme is put together and broadcast, the races will
be available to watch live via Cycling Ireland’s YouTube and Facebook accounts.
"Cyclocross is a fast-paced and thrilling spectator sport which we are looking forward to bringing to new and existing fans,” said Cycling Ireland president Matt McKerrow.
“The discipline of cyclocross has grown exponentially over the past number of years and we expect to see its popularity continue to rise.
“It's a fantastic activity for youths and juniors as it takes place off road in a controlled environment and is a great way of developing bike handling skills.
“I am sure newcomers to the sport will be inspired to give it a go when they watch the action unfold in Sligo this weekend.”
Damien Creighton and Bernard Twomey of Ballina Cycling Club, which is promoting the championships, said they were very pleased to bring the title races to the west.
“We are thrilled here in Ballina CC to be able to bring the Irish Cyclocross Championships to the Northwest and hope that this will really boost the adult and youth participation levels of Cyclocross in Connacht,” they said in a joint statement.
“A special thanks must go to the Ballina CC cyclocross team who have worked tirelessly all winter in preparation for this event, giving up their free time to build and organise what we hope will be a truly memorable event in the West of Ireland.”
