Three Irish cyclists competing with British Continental level teams have been selected for the Tour de Yorkshire; Chris McGlinchey, Robbie McCarthy and Rory Townsend.

McGlinchey has been given the nod by his
Vitus Pro Cycling team. Townsend and McCarthy will ride the race for Canyon dhb
p/b Bloor Homes.

It is an excellent opportunity for all
three; getting to ride against some of the biggest teams in the world,
including a Chris Froome-led Team Ineos.

Interestingly, there are just four
WorldTour teams in the race. Because of that, the field is perhaps weaker this
year.

However, while that may give the small
squads in the race a better chance of taking a stage win or even a good placing
will be a very difficult task.

Of the Irish trio named by the British teams for the race, Townsend is the former rider having really excelled so far this year.

He won the recent 105 mile Klondike GP

The 23-year-old also took 3rd
in the recent Classic Loire Atlantique (1.1) in France. And he was also 3rd
in last weekend’s Rutland-Melton Cicle Classic (1.2).

McCarthy is the rider who has proven
himself before at this level and would dearly love to do that again.

He took 5th on stage 3 of the
race last year into Scarborough and if he gets a run at the line again he can
challenge once more.

For McGlinchey the race will be a new
experience and is a fascinating milestone considering where he’s come from.

A top downhill rider in the past, he
came to road racing late but developed in a couple of seasons into one of the
best on the domestic front.

He secured national selection and also
finished runner-up in the National Road Race Championships in 2017 to Ryan
Mullen (Trek-Segafredo).

While he took a break for a very large
chunk of the season last year, he began winning again immediately he returned.

And this year he is obvious class was
recognised with a place on the Vitus Pro Cycling team. Riding in Yorkshire is a
huge step up for him but don’t be surprised to see him pull something out of
the bag.
