Irish cyclists to ride against Border in sportive that makes mockery of it

The cycle route makes a joke of the idea of trying to implement a hard Border

Irish cyclists will ride against the Border this weekend in a sportive take effectively makes a mockery of the idea of a hard Border.

The Bicycles Against Borders event
criss-crosses the Border – which is not a physical boundary at present but could
see Border infrastructure put in place in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

While the threat of a no-deal has faded
somewhat over the past weeks, it is not off the table.

And the fact this ride crosses the Border over and back 19 times (as we count it – Ed) makes a mockery of the notion a hard Border is even possible.

The event is being organised by Cuchulainn Cycling Club, which is based in Co Louth, and is open to all.

“The idea is to cycle on as many Border crossings as possible in one spin, for the weekend that's in it,” the club said of its sportive is set to take place as Brexit still hangs in the balance.

“Participants can join and leave the route at whatever
points suit them. There will be a coffee stop at the Carrickdale Hotel and
everyone is welcome there.

“We also plan to invite other cycling clubs on both
sides of the border. We will be leaving Felda at 9am on Saturday and expect to
arrive at the Carrickdale between 11:00am and 11:30am.”

The club that any cyclists thinking of taking part should feel free to invite friends along.
