Irish cyclists qualify total of 10 places for Tokyo Olympic Games

Seven cyclists will be picked for the Irish Olympic team and will fill 10 spaces in road and track events

Irish cyclists have qualified a total of 10 places at the Olympics, which will be filled by a maximum of seven riders.

The allocation has been confirmed by the UCI and by
Cycling Ireland, with Ireland’s places secured in both track and road racing.

The Irish track team directly qualified in two events;
the men’s and women’s madisons.

However, by virtue of qualifying for the madison one
starting space in the men’s and women’s omniums have also been secured.

The only condition for taking up the place in the men’s
omnium of women’s omnium is that it must be filled by one of the riders
competing in the madison.

In reality, that means if Mark Downey and Felix English are selected by Cycling Ireland for the madison one of them will also race the omnium in Tokyo.

Similarly, if Lydia Gurley and Lydia Boylan are selected for the women’s omnium one of them will also ride the omnium.

The track places - like those for the road events - are qualified for Ireland rather than any individual Irish riders.

That means a group of female and male track riders is eligible for selection.

Confirmation of what riders will actually race for Ireland in Tokyo will only emerge closer to the Games.

Aside from the track events, Ireland has also qualified three slots in the men’s road race in Tokyo and one place in the TT.

However, the TT must be ridden by one of the three riders
representing Ireland in the road race; a factor that may significantly
influence selection.

The permutations mean the Irish Olympic team will be comprised of two male track cyclists, two female track cyclists and three male road cyclists.
