A new study by former national coach Frank O’Leary is examining the personality types or traits that lead to cycling success most often.

O’Leary is seeking participants from the racing community
in Ireland to take part in his study.

Those interested can play their part, and add to his body of research, by completing a short questionnaire which he has compiled.

The research is being carried out as part of O’Leary’s
academic studies. He is seeking to establish the traits that predict success in cycling over the long term.

“I’m looking at self-efficacy, grit, and
behaviour traits of conscientiousness
emotional resilience,” O’Leary told stickybottle.

“Self-efficacy
has proven to be a very strong predictor of repeatable performances,” he said of one’s belief in their ability
to achieve a goal.

“Grit and
the other behaviour traits predict long term success in many other sports, though there’s very little research on
cyclists.

“It's
something that sparked my interest while working with high performance cyclists and this research I’m doing is based
on Irish cyclists.”

O’Leary is
conducting the research as part of his studies at the Department of
Psychology of Dublin Business School.

To take part you
must be over the age of 18 and the survey is anonymous and confidential.
