An Irish cyclist was lucky to emerge from a highly unusual incident in Co Limerick during which she was trampled on by horses being raced by a number of boys.

The incident occurred on the University of Limerick
riverbank cycling and walking route on Thursday afternoon.

Thankfully, while cyclist Kate Twohig was injured during
the incident she was conscious throughout and did not suffer any life-changing
injuries.

Indeed, she was able to communicate with gardai and
paramedics called to the scene, with the young boys on the horses fleeing from
the area after they knocked Kate off her bike and trampled her.

The injured rider, who works as a school teacher in Limerick, Tweeted about her experience and shared photos in a bid to emphasise the seriousness of what she faced.

She said by going public in the way that she has she was
hopeful the same experience would not befall other people.

Kate added that a young girl was on the same stretch of
the walking and cycling path and only avoided being trampled by the horses when
her father grabbed her out of the way.

"I was cycling along the bank and I had one of my
biggest scares. Three boys on horses were racing down the path,” she said.

“They narrowly missed hitting a girl around
three-years-old but the father managed to grab her in time.

"They collided straight into me. I was knocked from my bike and trampled," explained the Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh teacher.

She added while she was unlucky to have been on the cycling and walking path at the same time the three boys on horses came racing down it, she was fortunate to only come away with injuries she will recover from.

Nonetheless, she was left with not insignificant
injuries. "My knee was split open. I was very lucky as if it was half an
inch higher or lower my tendons and ligaments would have been in trouble.

“I’m a keen marathon runner and cyclist. I was just
coming back from a knee injury before this.”

She was given treatment at the scene by paramedics before
being taken to hospital for further medical attention. Kate has since been discharged
and said she was very thankful to the medical staff and the gardai.

In the future, she said anyone who witnessed similar incidents or who fell victim to them should report them to the Garda.
