Stephen Clancy has already undergone that operation.

“With it being so late in the season, Stephen’s injury means he will not be able to race again this year and will now focus on his recovery in the off-season,” Dr Lagrou added.

Clancy stayed in Germany to undergo his operation before returning to his base in Girona, Spain, to recuperate.

Still aged just 25 years, Clancy is in his fifth season with the team.

It has a roster of diabetic cyclists, with the aim of the team to show the condition can be overcome.

Clancy had been going well of late and came close to a top result at the Tour of China II.

He spent stage 3 in the winning escape and would be caught just a few hundred metres from the finish line.
