Limerick rider Stephen Clancy will race for the American Novo-Nordisk team in 2019 having renewed his contract, it has been confirmed.
Team Novo Nordisk is the world’s first all-diabetes professional cycling team. And Clancy, who has type-1 diabetes, has been part of the squad since 2013.
After a year plagued by a broken collarbone, followed by a knee injury, Clancy is keen to put 2018 behind him with his sights firmly set on the future.
“This has definitely been my most frustrating season so far in terms of injuries so to get the contract in the bag for next year is great.” said Clancy.
“Usually you can feel a bit empty at the end of the season but because I missed so much racing I don’t feel as tired compared to previous years.
“I’m definitely motivated for next season,” he added of what will be his seventh campaign in the pro peloton.
Clancy, who finished his season in China at the Tour of Hainan, will now rest ahead of what will be a hectic few months of preparation for next year.
“I’ll take a short break from the bike now before the team meet up at our first training camp in Almeria at the end of November,” he explained.
“After that we will have sponsor meetings in Atlanta in the USA and then more training camps in Spain.”
Now based in Barcelona, Clancy received the news of a new contract while on a trip back to Ireland.
He was speaking at a public event organised by the Diabetes Team at Galway University Hospital.
Though still just 26 years old, Clancy is already thinking long term and keen to keep his options open in his post-riding career.
“At the moment coaching is keeping things interesting, it also gives me a bit of experience for the future,” he said of coaching other riders.
“Some of the guys I worked with last year had some good results and were happy so it’s nice to be able to play a part in that.”
