Sam Bennett did some stretching before he got up on the bike fit machine. He has clearly been worked hard on his flexibility, as this shot shows.
Irish cyclist Sam Bennett shows how flexible he is
Nobody would have argued with Irish cyclist Sam Bennett had he vegged out at the end of the season and even hit the tiles.
But just after he departed the recent Tour of Turkey, with four stage wins, he was working to find even more speed and power.
Bennett caught up with the guys at CycleFit UK to tweak his position.
These guys are top of the range operators. And no matter how good the pros’ bike positions are they can generally be improved every so often.
One thing that really caught our eye during Sam Bennett’s session with them was just how flexible he is.
He did a few stretches to get ready for the fit; underlining how flexibility is now a really important aspect of cycling.
It can be vital for recovery, especially if you get used to it over time. And of course it also helps for position and strength on the bike.
Friend of the site and yoga teacher Sinead Kennedy said Sam Bennett is doing the pigeon pose in this shot.
“Pigeon pose is one of my favourite go to poses after cycling; especially after a day with heavy climbing,” she said.
“You can ease our sore tired glutes, that’s buttocks. Be mindful though; these muscles are strong and need time to ‘melt’.
“Ease into pigeon pose; take deep breaths to help deepen the stretch. But if your glutes are tight this is going to pinpoint some real pinch spots.
“If you’re not as bendy as Sam Bennett is, try a modified pigeon lying on your back.
“Cross right ankle onto left thigh, draw the left knee in towards your chest. Manoeuvre until you feel a stretch in your right buttock.”
