Cyclist Philip Lavery won a number of races at home this year, as well as competing abroad. And now he has joined a domestic team for the 2018 road racing season. Above, riding for Cofidis in 2013.
Philip Lavery joins Strata3-VeloRevolution for 2018
One of the best riders on the domestic scene any time he raced this year, Philip Lavery has found a new team.
The Dubliner will ride for Strata 3-VeloRevolution in 2018. It’s a team built by former Masters road race champion Aidan Crowley.
The team has ridden strongly in recent years and Lavery will add more fire power.
Mark Dowling rode for the squad in 2017 but has since moved on. And Lavery will effectively step into his place as the marquee name in the line-up.
He won a string of races this year including the Laragh Classic.
Philip Lavery also took wins in Dunsany at the Leinster championships and at the Raparee Cup.
He won the Noel O'Neill Trophy in Dublin's Phoenix Park and Coombes-Connor Memorial in Drogheda.
The 27-year-old cyclist began his season by claiming a stage of the Tour of Good Hope in South Africa.
He rode for H&R Block Pro Racing on the international scene for stints this year.
Lavery lined out with the Canadian Continental-level team for the Tours of China. Earlier in the year he also rode the Tour of the Gila and the Tour de Cascade in the US.
In Portugal he competed in the Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta Santander Totta. He would line out in the Rás in May; taking 6th on stage 3.
Given his aggressive style of all-out racing and his previous results, he could challenge for a Rás stage win and at the national championships.
Philip Lavery medals at past nationals
He is a former U23 national road champion and took silver and bronze in the elite race; in 2013 and 2012 respectively.
Lavery has ridden for An Post-Chainreaction in the past as well as UK team Node4-Giordana and Synergy Baku.
He landed a trial with ProContinental team Cofidis in 2013.
However, he was unlucky in that several pro teams folded that year. As a result there was a glut of experienced pro riders on the transfer market.
We'll have more news soon on Strata3-VeloRevolution as it prepares for next season.
