Oisín O’Callaghan is Ireland's young sports star of the year, an incredible achievement by the world junior downhill champion. Above, being presented with his award live on RTE TV tonight by host Darragh Maloney

Oisín O’Callaghan took a world title last year and now the junior downhill champion has been voted Ireland's young sports star of the year.

The Limerick teenager has taken the trophy tonight in the RTE Young Sportsperson of 2020 Award.

While there are many other sports awards in Ireland when we look back on each year in sport, the RTE awards are by far the most prestigious and O'Callaghan's wins shows just how far he has come.

The 17-year-old took two UCI Downhill World Cup wins last year, both in Slovenia in October, and also claimed junior gold at the World Championships in Austria the same month.

For the RTE award, O’Callaghan was up against Aaron Hill, the snooker player who beat Ronnie O’Sullivan at the European Masters, as well as Kildare boxer Katelyn Phelan who won the WBC youth title in the welterweight division.

Also nominated was Keane Barry who won the BDO World Youths Championship and Mayo football defender Oisin Mullin.
