Sean McFadden rounded out last year by joining Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin Fenix) out training when he was in UAE. And now McFadden, who became a Rás Tailteann rider in his 40s, has caught up with Caleb Ewan for a spin.
McEwan is one of Sam Bennett's main rivals in the sprints and is in UAE at present for the UAE Tour, which is now three stages in.
But before the race began at the weekend the Australian was out doing his training as he has been based in UAE for the last few weeks. When McFadden ran into him on the road one day they made arrangements to meet the following day, as you do.
"We did four hours in total and we covered 136km, which included some interval work because Caleb was doing three-minute efforts," McFadden told stickybottle.
"He did five of those intervals and the we rode for about 45km before he did more intervals, doing one-minute efforts. It was really good, myself and the other guys I was with really enjoyed it."
McFadden was the only Irish rider in the group but among the "other guys" he was with was Ironman athlete Joe Skipper, who was 6th at the Worlds in Kona in 2019.
British athlete Skipper has also taken wins in Florida, New Zealand and the UK and is ranked 7th in the world. Also in the group was another British professional triathlete Sam Proctor.
McFadden - who shared his data for the ride below - said while it was hard to stay with Ewan, the nature of the efforts the Australian was putting in meant he could sit on him (while shooting a video, below).
