Irish cyclist jailed for sexual assault, club mate went to gardai

A cyclist on a weekend away with his club has been convicted of sexual assault and jailed after a club mate reported him to the gardai.

A weekend away with a cycling club has resulted in a jail term for one of the riders after he sexually assaulted a woman in a hotel.

Edmund Stewart (33) was convicted of sexual assault after a club mate with him realised what he had done and was so disgusted by his actions he reported the incident to the Garda.

The convicted man, who is from Co Antrim, was initially given a suspended three-year jail sentence in March of this year.

But when the leniency of the sentence was appealed, the appeals court yesterday ruled he must serve nine months.

It meant Stewart was led away after the ruling yesterday to begin his jail term.

Stewart (33), Ardgate Place, Newtownabbey, pleaded guilty at Cavan Circuit Criminal Court to sexually assaulting a woman at the Farnham Arms Hotel, Co Cavan, on June 24th, 2012.

His suspended jail term, now appealed, was imposed in March of this year in Cavan.

In court it emerged that Stewart was on a weekend away with his cycling club and had spent the evening drinking in Cavan town.

In the early hours of the morning another cyclist on the trip realised Stewart had sexually assaulted a woman with his fingers as she lay slumped on a couch intoxicated in the lobby of the hotel.

Stewart even confirmed what he had done and his disgusted club mate reported the attack to the Garda in Cavan.

The victim outlined how she felt disgusted and violated, adding she felt guilty because she had consumed alcohol, blacked out and fallen asleep.

The court was also told she found it hard to believe somebody could act in such an offensive manner.
