Irish cyclist Imogen Cotter hits the big time with Movistar eRacing deal

Imogen Cotter wins in Zolder last year ahead of pro riders and now she has signed for the Movistar eTeam

Irish cyclist Imogen Cotter has taken a massive step forward in her cycling career by signing for WorldTour team Movistar as part of its new eRacing line-up.

Movistar confirmed in a statement on Monday that Cotter (27), a late-comer to cycling, was part of its eight-rider line-up for top flight pro eRacing in the year ahead.

The Movistar eTeam is also comprised of Britain’s Steph Clutterbuck, Denmark’s Daniel Guld, Britain’s Jimmy Kershaw, Scotland’s Beth Maciver, Norway’s Vidar Mehl, Manx rider Becky Storrie and Dutch rider Pim van Diemen.

Cotter has been riding for Belgian elite outfit Keukens Redant Cycling Team for the past couple of years but her career is now headed for eRacing with one of the biggest teams in the sport.

Movistar welcomed the eight new riders to the team, saying they were “the first virtual esports and cycling team created" within the WorldTour.

“The eight cyclists will compete for us from April in the Premier Division of the Zwift Racing League, the highest category of virtual cycling, and in other events  - competitive or recreational - on the trainer,” Movistar said on Monday.

“They will also be Movistar Team ambassadors, wear our kits and represent our sponsors for the remainder of 2021,” the team said. It added it was looking forward to having the new riders as part of the team.

Cotter also announced her news on social media on Monday
and stickybottle will catch up with her for an interview in coming days.

“After a grueling few weeks with
some of the toughest efforts I’ve ever put in, I’m thrilled to have made the
final cut and be joining Movistar as they launch the first World Tour e-sports
team,” she said.

“I’ll be kicking off racing next
month in the Zwift Racing League Premier Division. I’m honestly so excited
about this... I never thought in a million years I’d make it through to the
final cut.”

Cotter, who was 2nd in the elite national road race championships in 2019, previously got into the final 10 riders from about 9,000 entries in the Zwift Academy 2019. She has since won a pro race on the road in Zolder and has now taken a huge step forward in signing for the Movistar eTeam.
