Irish cyclist gets very rapid reaction from Garda after this close pass | Video

There may have been a delay of just over a month getting this complaint moving - due to Covid-19 - but once the gardai got going they were very fast indeed. The driver also played his part in the speedy resolution as he accepted the overtaking move was unacceptable

This cyclist got a very fast response from gardai when he reported a driver for close passing him in his van.

The two overtaking moves in the video below occurred on September 21st, with the cyclist involved having no issue with the first one but reporting the second one to the Garda.

Having made the initial report via the TrafficWatch facility, the cyclist - who goes under the @righttobikeit Twitter handled - had to wait until yesterday to give a statement to gardai as Covid-19 meant some members of the force were unavailable.

However, the statement was made yesterday at around lunchtime and later in the afternoon the cyclist saw the same van parked outside the local Garda station, in the Munster area.

Some 30 minutes after that he got a call from the gardai to say the driver had been issued with a fixed charge notice, incurring a fine of €120 and three penalty points.

That was a very quick turn around by the gardai after the initial delay and it wasn't the only positive thing to come from the encounter.

The cyclist involved has told stickybottle that when gardai showed the driver this footage of the way he had passed the rider, the drive accepted his overtaking was of order and was "disgusted with himself".
