The popular annual Irish cycling sportive has been saddened by a fatality; one of the participants dying during the sportive despite efforts to save his life.
Cyclist dies suddenly at Mayo Pink Ribbon Cycle sportive
A cyclist has died during a charity sportive in the west of Ireland. The man’s death took place yesterday though news of the tragedy is only now emerging.
The deceased man has been named as Frank Endicott. He was from Phibsborough, Dublin. He also had an address in Newport, Co Mayo.
Mr Endicott was a married father of two. He died after taking ill during the Mayo Pink Ribbon Charity Cycle in Co Mayo.
It is understood his wife had started the event with him. However, local reports suggest she was not with him when he took ill at Ballylahan Bridge, near Foxford.
After becoming unwell while on his bike other riders came to his aid. And despite their efforts, and medical staff also intervening, he sadly died.
The event is an annual sportive that raises money for breast cancer research.
“Frank's death has cast a sad cloud over this year's event,” a spokesperson for the sportive said.
Mr Endicott’s passing was confirmed as a death notice was published online with his funeral details.
“The death has occurred suddenly of Frank (Francis) Endicott, Phibsbourgh, Dublin 7,” it said.
“Beloved by his wife Marita (McDonnell), his daughters Chloe and Ruth and his extended family.
“Reposing at the McDonnell residence Quay Road Newport from 6-8pm, Tuesday 8th.
“Service and reflection at the Quay Road, Wednesday 9th of May, at 2pm with burial afterwards in Burrishoole Cemetery.”
The notice added only family flowers should be sent and that the wake on Tuesday was strictly private.
It also asked that any donations be made to Mayo Pink Ribbon Charity, care of Chambers' undertakers Newport.
