The elite men's Irish team for tomorrow's race at the World Championships in Bergen is down to five as Damien Shaw is out of the event.

The Irish team has been dealt a blow on the eve of the elite men’s road race at the World Championships with news Damien Shaw has been ruled out.

From Mullingar in Co Westmeath, Shaw was due to make his debut at this level. And his inability to make the start line is a huge disappointment.

Cycling Ireland has said Shaw is out of the race due to an unspecified injury.

While bitterly disappointing for the An Post-Chainreaction man on a personal level, it also weakens the Irish team.

The elite men qualified six riders for tomorrow’s race; a bigger number than Ireland is used to.

However, with Shaw out of the race that leaves five men due to go to the start line in Bergen.

Going into battle are Nicolas Roche, Dan Martin, Sean McKenna, Ryan Mullen and Conor Dunne.

Roche has already been in action in Bergen. The BMC Racing riding put in a very strong ride in Wednesday’s TT.

He finished 12th in the race against the clock, his best ever ride at a Worlds TT.
