An Irish cyclist has been airlifted to hospital in Spain having crashed descending while on a group ride.
The injured man, who is in his 50s, was hit by a van and suffered injuries to his head and upper body yesterday.
He was descending a climb in Tenerife at about 2pm local time when he crashed and became trapped under a car.
The Irish Independent reports the man had to be freed from under the Renault car by fire fighters before being treated at the scene by paramedics.
He was then taken by helicopter from the crash scene, near the village of El Fronton in southern Tenerife, to hospital in the island’s capital, Santa Cruz.
The injured man, who has not been named in local reports, had been staying in the Adeje resort on the island.
At the time of the crash he had gone ahead of other cyclists he was with.
But he collided with a van as he descended and then became trapped under the other car. He suffered head and chest injuries.
The local police are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
