Police in the North are investigating after a cyclist in his 70s was the victim of a hit-and-run incident yesterday while out training.
The 73 year-old, whose name has yet to be released, was found by a passing motorist at around 10.30am on the Shore Road close to the junction of the Oakleigh Road in Ballyronan.
It is unclear how the man got there but the PSNI in Magherafelt are appealing for information from the public who may be able to assist with the investigation.
As soon as the man was discovered, the alarm was raised and emergency services were called to the scene.
The victim was treated on the roadside by paramedics and then taken to hospital, where an examination of his injuries led staff to believe he had been struck by a vehicle while cycling.
“Later that afternoon police were contacted after medical staff expressed concern that the cyclist’s injuries may suggest he had been struck by a vehicle,” said constable Kernohan from Magherafelt police station.
“We are investigating the circumstances that led to the cyclist being found injured and we would like to hear from people who were travelling on the Shore Road yesterday morning.”
The cyclist was wearing a white and black coloured top and cycling shorts, a gun metal grey helmet, black and lime green gloves, silver rimmed glasses and white cycle shoes.
The PSNI appealed concluded: “If you believe you saw this male or have any information that can help us, please call police in Magherafelt on 101 quoting reference 793 of 06/08/16.”
