But in a year when some of our Irish Olympians and Paralympians excelled and when the likes of jockey Rachael Blackmore, golfer Leona Maguire and cricketer Amy Hunter - to name but a few - excelled, it was Dunlevy and McCrystal who scooped the sports award.

They went to the Paralympics as favourites for a medal, but with all of the pressure that status brings onto any athlete.

However, the opened their campaign with a silver medal in the pursuit on the track before winning gold in the TT and doing it again in the road race to become the poster girls of the Irish team in Tokyo.

They were also crowned champions in Rio in 2016 and since those Games they have won five world titles on the road; three in the TT and two in the road race.
