Irish cycling may be in lock-down now, with races and
sportives suspended due to the pandemic, but an interesting new endurance event
is being planned for when things get back to normal.

The new ‘Mondello 24’ cycling event, as the name suggests, is 24 hours of cycling on the Mondello motor racing circuit in Co Kildare.

The idea has already been tried with great success in France where 'Shimano 24h Cycling' is effectively a cycling version of the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans motor racing event.

And now cyclists who fancy having a go at the epic format in Ireland will have a chance to do so later this year. They can tackle Mondello 24 as an individual or as part of a team on Saturday, October 16th.

The challenge - for individuals riding the full 24 hours
on their own or for teams riding in relay format - is to complete as many laps
of the circuit as possible in the 24-hour period.

Teams of up to eight riders are permitted and each team can work out a schedule for its members based on the ability of each rider. Those taking part can race the event to win or can do it simply for the challenge of finishing.

Individual entry is €275, while a two-person team
costs €345. It’s €555 for a four-person team and €775 for an eight-rider team.

“The Mondello 24 is an exciting new endurance cycling challenge on a closed circuit for those who not only want to test their physical and mental strength – but who also want to have some fun and maybe make some new friends,” the organisers say on the event’s website which is now live.

“Our ultimate aim is to organise a cycling weekend
festival on our iconic motor circuit; to create a weekend celebration for
cyclists of all levels and all ages.

“As well as our 24 hour challenge for solo riders and
teams to enjoy, we will also have some fun for the younger ones in the family.
Get ready to enjoy smooth surfaces, fast racing lines and time with friends and
rivals.”
