Irish road and track teams named for elite European Games in Minsk

The Irish road and track team to ride the European Games in Minsk, Belarus, next month.

Some 16 riders in total have been selected, with most of those riding the track, though what events each selected rider will compete in has not been confirmed by Cycling Ireland.

On the road five men are lining out for Ireland, with one woman picked of the female event.

The sole representative in that women’s race will be Alice Sharpe who is riding for WCC Team this year, the UCI’s women’s professional trade them.

And in the men’s race there is a mix of WorldTour, ProConti and Continental riders.

Ryan Mullen (Trek Segafredo) is selected as is Conor Dunne, the Israel Cycling Academy man currently riding the Giro.

Mark Downey (EvoPro Racing) also gets the nod as does Robbie McCarthy (Canyon) and Michael O’Loughlin (Team Wiggins).

The information released does not state who will ride the road race and/or TT.

However, if past selections are any guide Mullen and O’Loughlin will likely line out for Ireland against the watch and also join the other three in the road race.

Ryan Mullen has performed very well for Ireland at major championships in the past.

The TTs and road races take from June 22nd to 25th followed by the track cycling from June 27th to 30th.

The Olympic Federation of Ireland today named a squad of 65 athletes from nine sports to compete in the second edition of the European Games in Minsk.

The Games feature 15 sports, eight of which are part of the Road to Tokyo 2020 qualification process.

Team Ireland will field teams in archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, canoe Sprint, cycling, gymnastics, judo and shooting.
