Irish cycling club waives fees amid Covid19 to ensure riders don’t lose insurance cover

An Irish cycling club has decided to waive its renewal fee for members until the end of March due to Covid-19.

Emyvale CC in Co Monaghan said it noticed the number of members renewing their memberships was slow of late. It was concerned riders whose memberships were lapsing were losing their all-important insurance cover as a result.

For that reason, and because some cyclists had also been financially hit by the pandemic, Emyvale CC - which processes its memberships via Cycling Ireland and Cycling Ulster - is waiving its €20 renewal fee.

Many riders believe club and racing activities will not resume for some time because of the pandemic and have delayed renewing their club membership or Cycling Ireland membership as a result.

Emyvale CC's offer for free renewals, or new memberships, is in place until the end of March in a bid to encourage riders to act immediately so their club membership does not lapse, and their insurance cover with it.

“Without our members, we won’t have a club and we have a
fantastic cohort of members to serve,” club
chairperson Mark Skeath said.

“Unfortunately
under the current restrictions, our options for club activities are very
limited, but this situation will improve soon with vaccine availability on the
horizon.

“However,
in addition to lower membership uptake, our main concern right now is that
cyclists are out and about (subject to restrictions) and many of those who
usually would be, are cycling uninsured.”

Club safety
officer and Cycling Ulster chairperson, Tommy McCague, said any members of Cycling Ireland or Cycling
Ulster had insurance cover as part of their memberships and it was crucial to
maintain that cover now.

“This is
an important issue, even more so when restrictions ease off and group cycling
resumes with greater numbers on the road. Unfortunately in life, insurance is
often forgotten until the worst happens.”

“In response to this risk, the club committee have agreed
to waive our annual €20 membership fee for the year 2021, for all those renewing with Cycling Ireland, or
joining (for the first time)
before March 30th. Refunds will be issued in the coming weeks to those who have
already paid.”

Mark Skeath added:
“We sincerely hope that our members renew their Cycling Ireland membership,
because this includes the all-important insurance.

“Third party insurance is included by default, but there is also a personal accident insurance option available for an additional €10. We would strongly advise our members taking out this option, if they are in a position to do so.”
