Northern Irish cycling club stalwart Roger ‘Raja’ Chambers has sadly died suddenly while out mountain biking with family members.
Mr Chambers was a former member of
Banbridge Cycling Club and Team Vision Racing while also a coach with the
Apollo Rockets youth cycling project.
Aged just 61 years and from Tullylish in Co Down, he was cycling in Castlewellan Forest Park on Saturday with his grandson and a friend when he collapsed and died.

Team Vision Racing (TVR) said it was “with heavy hearts”
that its members offered its condolences to Mr Chambers’s wife Libby on his
sudden death.
“Raja was a long time member and
previous chairman of the club. He will be sadly missed by all of us and indeed
the wider cycling community,” it said.
“He most definitely was a true
gentleman who loved and lived life to the full. Rest in peace Raja.”
Apollo Cycling Team said it was “very
saddened” to hear of the passing of “one of our ‘rocket’ coaches and friend”.
“Raja had been with us for two years
and in that time had made not only a huge impact with the kids but was an
invaluable coach to the ‘rockets’,” it said.
“A true gentleman and always a smile
and a kind word to say to everyone. We send our condolences to his wife Libby,
and daughter Hayley, his grandson Noah and granddaughter Savannah.”
Banbridge Cycling Club also offered
it’s condolences to his family, saying: The members of Banbridge CC, and
indeed the wider cycling community, are saddened and shocked at the sudden
passing of our friend Raja Chambers.
“A well known figure in local cycling and a previous
member of Banbridge CC, he was always a very willing volunteer and helper at
events. Our sincerest of condolences go out to his family in their time of
loss.”
