Irish cycling club appeals after heartless thieves steal from cycling family

The Sharkeys, of Stamullen Road Club, bought this caravan last year and since then it has become a special place for their son Sean (15). However, its theft has now left them distraught as a number of Sean's personal belongings were also in the caravan when it was stolen last week

Drogheda Wheelers has urged members of the cycling community to be on the look-out for a caravan that was stolen from the Sharkey family, who are well known on the road cycling scene.

The caravan is a special one as it is a haven for Fiona
and Peter Sharkey’s son Sean, who has a number of disabilities and for whom the
family caravan is a special place.

Sean (15) has Down’s syndrome and autism as well as being non-verbal and blind in one eye. He has taken a real shine to the caravan since the family bought it and now its theft is a major blow to the Sharkeys.

Peter rides with Stamullen Road Club and his daughter Aoibhínn (13) is also racing and has enjoyed several race wins on the youth scene.

“It belongs to Peter Sharkey, his wife Fiona and family
who are heavily involved in the cycling community in and around the Drogheda
area,” the club said. “The caravan is adapted to facilitate their special needs
son and is a huge loss to them.”

While Sean normally has difficulty sleeping, he has slept perfectly in the caravan since the family purchased it last year for traveling around.

It is also fitted with a special bed rail for children with special needs and also contained some of Sean’s other personal items.

If anyone in the cycling community sees it being offered for sale or being driven around they should contact their nearest Garda station. The caravan is a 2014 Sterling Eccles Sport 586. It is six-berth, white in colour with a black front.

Gardaí in Meath said: “On the night of June 10th-11th
caravans were stolen from a yard in Gernonstown, Slane. Thieves broke into the
yard and caused criminal damage to other property at the location.

"If there was anyone in the area during the night
and saw any suspicious activity or can help to get the property back, please
give the Gardaí a call on 046-9021445.”
