Irish clubs cancelling events due to storm set for Saturday and Sunday

Omagh Wheelers has decided to postponed its event planned for the weekend as has Barrow Wheelers; also due to Storm Ciara

Irish cycling clubs have begun cancelling planned events this weekend due to the approaching Storm Ciara, with other clubs expected to follow.

Met Éireann is forecasting very stormy conditions this
weekend with a yellow extreme weather warning for high winds and heavy rain
issued.

The wind warning applies to the whole country from 9am on Saturday until midnight Sunday into the early hours of Monday morning.

While the rain warning is for a shorter period, it still
applies from 12 noon on Saturday until 3pm on Sunday.

On Saturday gusts up to 110km per hour are forecast with
rain while Storm Ciara was expected to cross the country on Sunday.

Barrow Wheelers has decided to postponed its 100km
sportive that had been planned for Sunday.

“Due to the high winds and rain forecast for Sunday morning. We are very disappointed to have to make this call but it’s the right thing to do in these circumstances.”

However, the club added it hoped to rearrange the event
for a later date and would release details in due course.

Omagh Wheelers has followed that example, saying it had
decided to postpone its reliability trial planned for Sunday.

“After monitoring the severe weather warnings for this weekend
the club has decided to postpone,” it said.

“Cyclist`s safety has to be our number one priority. Once
we have a confirmed alternative date we will confirm.”
