Irish club cyclist killed on training ride
An Irish club cyclist has been killed after he and three friends he was on a training ride with were in collision with a car.
The driver of the vehicle has been arrested and is helping the PSNI with its investigations.
One of the other cyclists was seriously injured but his condition is not life threatening.
Another cyclist on the training ride suffered a head injury involving concussion and the fourth rider was uninjured.
The cyclist's death comes after a dark period on the roads of the Republic. Ten cyclists have been killed this year.
The death toll in the south in the first half of the year is equal to the number of cyclists killed in all of last year.
News of the fatality broke this evening though the incident occurred just before 2pm in Co Down; on the Ards to Bangor road.
The cyclist who was killed, a member of a prominent club in the North, was with his three training companions when they were hit by the car near Conlig.
The emergency services were called to the scene and treated the injured men. Due to his injuries, one of the cyclists sadly died after being taken to hospital.
In a statement to the media, the PSNI’s Insp Stephen McGuigan outlined details of the fatal incident.
“The collision, involving a white Hyundai car and three cyclists, occurred on the Bangor-bound carriageway shortly before 2pm today,” Insp McGuigan said.
“One of the cyclists, a man aged 40, was taken to hospital where he sadly died from his injuries.
“Two other male cyclists were treated for injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.
“A 59-year-old man was arrested at the scene and remains in police custody assisting officers with their enquiries."
PSNI public appeal
Insp McGuigan urged anyone who may have information that could help the investigation to contact officers at the Collision Investigation Unit.
Especially relevant are those who were travelling on the Newtownards Road near Conlig at the time of the collision.
Stickybottle extends our deepest sympathies to the deceased man's family, friends and club mates. And our very best wishes go to the injured cyclists.
